Matt Bondurant’s historical novel, The WettestCountyInTheWorld, recounts the real-life exploits of his grandfather, who was part of a moonshining operation in Virginia during Prohibition. Australian director John Hillcoat, working from a screenplay by Nick Cave, has adapted the novel into a compelling gangster flick. In 1931, Jack (Shia LaBeouf) is in the shadow of his older brothers, the hulking Forrest (Tom Hardy) and the heavy-drinking Howard (Jason Clarke). The three make rocket fuel in the mountains and ship it to buyers by paying off the cops. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement thrown out of whack by the arrival of special deputy Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce), who wants a piece of the action. The ensuing violence is not for the faint-hearted. ★★★ Extras: True story of the wettest country in the world; Franklin County, VA: then and now; Midnight Run Willie Nelson music video; feature audio commentary with director John Hillcoat and author Matt Bondurant. ★★★
