This Best Foreign Language Film Oscar-winning Danish flick centres on the friendship between two boys. Doctor’s son Elias (Markus Rygaard) is the target of bullies until new student Christian (William Johnk Nielsen, above with Rygaard) steps in. A theme pitting aggression against pacifism comes to the fore with the introduction of Elias’s father, Anton (Mikael Persbrandt), who worked in a region of Kenya where he witnessed a warlord freely kill and maim. Back in Denmark, Anton’s stoic acceptance of an unprovoked personal attack is seen by Elias and Christian, who then plot a shocking revenge that could ruin their lives. The film powers towards a harrowing climax with an unsettling momentum which does not stop building. The resolution to the movie’s ethical conundrum will not be to the liking of all, but will not be forgotten. ★★★✩
