When the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix begins on Friday, former GP motorcycle champion Daryl Beattie will be there to call the action for Channel 10. TV Guide caught up with the Queensland-born commentator to find out about his favourite things.
Movie: When I think of movies I think of frozen Cokes. That’s why I go to the movies!
Book: I’ve only ever read a handful of books in my life. Chickenhawk by Robert Mason would be my favourite.
TV show: I’m a huge Shaun Micallef fan and will watch anything he is in.
Band or singer: If I had to pick a favourite it would be U2.
Album: I don’t have a favourite album. I put my iPod on shuffle and listen to an array of my albums.
Karaoke song: The only karaoke I have sung was when I lived in Japan in the early ’90s racing for Honda. I’m tone deaf and can’t sing but when the Japanese help you to sing Sailing by Rod Stewart and their English is not great, they think you’re great. Gadget: My Garmin watch. LIFESTYLE Holiday spot: I have a few – Cape York, Northern Territory, The Kimberley, and Moreton Island is like going home. Thing to do on the weekend: When you work in motorsport at Ten your weekends consist of Formula One and MotoGP. Place to go to relax: A good mountain-bike ride around Manly Dam in NSW is the perfect way to relax. I like AFL but tennis would be my favourite ball sport. Dinner conversation topics: Cooking is something I enjoy so normally dinner starts out with, ‘‘Gee, that’s really nice’’, or I go through the reasons why I got it wrong. Then it’s red wine and how was your day. HOME Room in your house: I live in a onebedroom apartment (so) the balcony is the best room. Art piece: I’ve got some great Japanese swords that were given to me by Honda, a couple of paintings by Picasso, but the one that means the most to me is a painting on a canvas by my son, Jordan. Luxury product: Bedding. I like my sheets washed every three days and something with a high thread count. FOOD Meal of all time: Tuna sashimi or cooked tuna over a wood-fired barbecue with mates in Cape York. Dish to cook: Vietnamese crab meat noodle soup.
