Former Brisbane Bronco and Queensland State of Origin star Ben Ikin has turned his experience as a rugby league player into a successful commentary career. His latest gig is as co-host of NRL 360, which airs Wednesdays at 7.30pm on FOX1. ENTERTAINMENT Movie: Joe Dirt. I watch that movie at least once a month. I can’t believe it didn’t pick up a single Oscar! Book: I’m enjoying The Hunger Games trilogy at the moment but I reckon my all time favourite book would be Moneyball: The Art Of Winning An Unfair Game by Michael Lewis. TV show: Modern Family. I want so very bad to be Jay – lots of money, plays heaps of golf and is married to Gloria. The perfect life! Band or singer: Ray Charles. Genius. Album: Into The Wild by Eddie Vedder. Karaoke song: I Want You Back by the Jackson 5. I’ve received rave reviews from many drunken fans. Gadget: My iPad, in particular the
iBooks and Kindle apps. LIFESTYLE Holiday spot: At the moment I would say Noosa Heads. Good food, good surf and good golf. Thing to do on the weekend: Call footy games and watch kids’ sport. My four kids have hit that age where parents become cabbies. Place to go to relax: Indooroopilly Golf Course. I play lots of golf very early in the morning against a mate who I regularly beat. Hobby: Golf, reading and surfing when I can. Sport to follow or play: I really only follow rugby league and miss it terribly across the summer break. Dinner conversation topics: The kids’ day at school and rugby league. We’re a family full of league tragics. HOME Room in your house: My home office/man cave. One of the great things about being a rugby league commentator is being able to watch as much footy as you want and tell your wife you’re working. Place to hide from everyone: Man cave/golf course. You can usually find me at either place. Art piece: My eldest daughter is a budding artist so anything she creates normally takes pride of place somewhere in my man cave. Item you can’t live without: My Nespresso machine. Luxury product: My wife. It’s not hard to see who got the good deal in our marriage. FOOD Meal of all time: My wife’s spaghetti aglio olio – olive oil, chilli, garlic, broccoli and parsley. Dish to cook: Steak on the barbecue. Family recipe: My mum makes mean curried sausages. Ingredient: Garlic. Hate the breath but love the taste. Guilty pleasure: Lindt chilli dark chocolate. Try it before you judge it. Bar: My back deck at home might have to be my pick. Restaurant: Il Centro at Eagle St Pier in Brisbane and Beppi’s Italian Restaurant at Darlinghurst in Sydney. Cafe: The two cafe´s around the corner from my house in Rosalie Village, Salt and Flute. STYLE Style icon: My wife gives me fashion advice. Does that count? Fashion designer: The bloke who decided it was OK to wear sneakers with jeans – Jerry Seinfeld? Piece of clothing: My sports coat. Shop: Retro Metro in Paddington. Artist: I love great surf photography.
