Set on New York’s mean streets in the 1980s, this flick follows Bobby (Joaquin Phoenix), the black sheep of his Polish-American family, who runs a glitzy nightclub, snorts coke, drinks and gambles. Bobby’s high life is about to be laid low after he is warned by his decorated police captain brother Joe (Mark Wahlberg) and chief of police father (Robert Duvall) that his club has become crack central for the Russian mafia, the same people who treat Bobby more like family than his own kin. Bobby brushes them off, until a raid on his club and a drive-by shooting that leaves Joe in hospital, forces him to choose sides in a war that’s about to turn very ugly. This is a crime yarn about redemption that is written solidly and is well-acted and entertaining enough that you should probably forgive the ending, which is a bit too Rambo- ish.
