DOA: DEAD OR ALIVE (2006) 7MATE, 8.30PM, M, ACTION

The Sunday Mail (Queensland) - TV Guide - - HIGHLIGHTS -

Corey Yuen’s Hong Kong martial arts movie based on the Dead or Alive computer game incredibly credits three writers for its comic-book plot. Pro-wrestler Tina (Jaime Pressly), master thief Christie (Australian Holly Valance), and ninja princess Kasumi (Devon Aoki) are competitors in a martial arts tournament with a $10 million prize. Their competitors at the tournament organised by the evil mastermind Dr Donovan (Eric Roberts) include a street fighter (Brian White), Australia’s strongest man (Derek Boyer) and tough Leon (Silvio Simac). It’s all about the girls and their bikini outfits, and perhaps the makers didn’t bother trying to make any sense of the storyline so the teenage boys likely to be drawn to this pop trash won’t have to think at all. Yuen offers many fight sequences, but they’re as cheesy as other elements of the movie, and that includes Valance’s performance, as painful to watch as someone dragging a fingernail across a blackboard. ★
