COPS AND ROBBERSONS (1994) 7TWO, 2PM, PG, COMEDY

The Sunday Mail (Queensland) - TV Guide - - HIGHLIGHTS -

Here is proof that Chevy Chase’s brand of humour has passed its use-by-date. In this squirmish comedy, Chase plays Norman Robberson, a character not unlike his NationalLampoon’s Clark Grizwald role. But where the Vacation movies at least had a spark of off-beat originality, CopsandRobbersons is a sorry mishmash of cliches. The Robbersons are a typical middle-American movie family – rather vague mum (Dianne Wiest), bumbling dad (Chase) and three not very appealing kids, none of whom seem to have much time for the others. Enter detective Lt Jake Stone (Jack Palance) and his young partner Tony (David Barry Gray), assigned to use the Robbersons’ house to stake out the counterfeiter-cumkiller living next door. Lt Stone is the cop with the hard exterior but heart of gold who gets to solve the case and the family’s problems all in under two hours. While Norman gets to play assistant to the cops, his attempts to help are so ridiculous they are downright embarrassing. ★★
