Television journalist and social comentator Caroline Jones is the presenter of ABC’s Australian Story bringing viewers compelling stories about notable Australians. Between digging in her garden and hosting the show, Caroline found time to tell us about her favourite things. Australian Story is on Monday, 8pm on ABC1.
Movie: The Bridges of Madison County: Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood sizzling on screen.
Book: The Darling Buds of May by H.E. Bates. Reading it, I become a member of the large, boisterous, well-fed, happy Larkin family.
TV show:: Gardening Australia, because I like the infectious enthusiasm of Costa Georgiadis.
Band or singer: I’ve always followed Tony Bennett (pictured), the singer’s singer; faultless, emotionally savvy interpretations.
Album: Argentinian Astor Piazzolla’s tango compositions are among my favourite music.
Gadget: A gadget I can’t do without is one from a $2 shop – it’s indispensable for loosening jar lids.
Holiday spot: Lord Howe Island NSW (pictured). It’s another world – clean air, beauty, few cars, bicycles by day, brilliant stars at night.
Thing to do on the weekend: Can’t beat a swim at the ocean baths.
Place to go to relax: My big green armchair with books piled up invitingly.
Hobby: Gardening. Earth under the fingernails and a matured compost heap turn me on.
Sport to follow or play: I enjoy following tennis but will be happier when more Aussies are at the top.
Dinner conversation topics: ‘‘Where is Australia heading?’’ gives plenty of scope.
Room in your house: My newly renovated bathroom is pretty cool.
Art piece: I treasure charcoal sketches of my mother and father among my art works.
Item you can’t live without: A reliable alarm clock.
Luxury product: I like to wear cotton or wool and look for Made in Australia labels.
Meal of all time: A nostalgic one from childhood: soft-boiled eggs with toast and vegemite soldiers. Dish to cook: I like to cook winter soup with everything in it.
Family recipe: A date loaf recipe from my cousin Dinah.
Ingredient: Pink rock salt from the Murray River.
Guilty pleasure: I find it very difficult to stop eating white peaches all summer.
Restaurant: How could you choose a favourite restaurant? I like variety.
Cafe: Any one with good coffee, where you can enjoy conversation without noise.
Style icon: Governor-General Quentin Bryce. She always looks exactly right.
Fashion designer: I hark back to the elegance of Balenciaga, Yves St Laurent and Chanel.
Piece of clothing: Soft, relaxing cotton casuals I wear at home.
Shop: Your Creative Image, Chatswood, Sydney.
