Tele­vi­sion jour­nal­ist and so­cial co­men­ta­tor Caro­line Jones is the pre­sen­ter of ABC’s Aus­tralian Story bring­ing view­ers com­pelling sto­ries about no­table Aus­tralians. Be­tween dig­ging in her gar­den and host­ing the show, Caro­line found time to tell us about her favourite things. Aus­tralian Story is on Mon­day, 8pm on ABC1.


Movie: The Bridges of Madi­son County: Meryl Streep and Clint East­wood siz­zling on screen.

Book: The Dar­ling Buds of May by H.E. Bates. Read­ing it, I be­come a mem­ber of the large, bois­ter­ous, well-fed, happy Larkin fam­ily.

TV show:: Gar­den­ing Aus­tralia, be­cause I like the in­fec­tious en­thu­si­asm of Costa Ge­or­giadis.

Band or singer: I’ve al­ways fol­lowed Tony Ben­nett (pic­tured), the singer’s singer; faultless, emo­tion­ally savvy in­ter­pre­ta­tions.

Al­bum: Ar­gen­tinian As­tor Pi­az­zolla’s tango com­po­si­tions are among my favourite mu­sic.

Gadget: A gadget I can’t do with­out is one from a $2 shop – it’s in­dis­pens­able for loos­en­ing jar lids.


Hol­i­day spot: Lord Howe Is­land NSW (pic­tured). It’s an­other world – clean air, beauty, few cars, bi­cy­cles by day, bril­liant stars at night.

Thing to do on the week­end: Can’t beat a swim at the ocean baths.

Place to go to re­lax: My big green arm­chair with books piled up invit­ingly.

Hobby: Gar­den­ing. Earth un­der the fin­ger­nails and a ma­tured com­post heap turn me on.

Sport to fol­low or play: I en­joy fol­low­ing ten­nis but will be hap­pier when more Aussies are at the top.

Din­ner con­ver­sa­tion top­ics: ‘‘Where is Aus­tralia head­ing?’’ gives plenty of scope.


Room in your house: My newly ren­o­vated bath­room is pretty cool.

Art piece: I trea­sure char­coal sketches of my mother and fa­ther among my art works.

Item you can’t live with­out: A re­li­able alarm clock.

Lux­ury prod­uct: I like to wear cot­ton or wool and look for Made in Aus­tralia la­bels.


Meal of all time: A nos­tal­gic one from child­hood: soft-boiled eggs with toast and vegemite soldiers. Dish to cook: I like to cook win­ter soup with ev­ery­thing in it.

Fam­ily recipe: A date loaf recipe from my cousin Di­nah.

In­gre­di­ent: Pink rock salt from the Mur­ray River.

Guilty plea­sure: I find it very dif­fi­cult to stop eat­ing white peaches all sum­mer.

Restau­rant: How could you choose a favourite restau­rant? I like va­ri­ety.

Cafe: Any one with good cof­fee, where you can en­joy con­ver­sa­tion with­out noise.


Style icon: Gover­nor-Gen­eral Quentin Bryce. She al­ways looks ex­actly right.

Fash­ion de­signer: I hark back to the el­e­gance of Ba­len­ci­aga, Yves St Lau­rent and Chanel.

Piece of cloth­ing: Soft, re­lax­ing cot­ton ca­su­als I wear at home.

Shop: Your Creative Im­age, Chatswood, Syd­ney.
