SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN (1952) GEM, 1.20PM, G, MUSICAL

The Sunday Mail (Queensland) - TV Guide - - HIGHLIGHTS -

Originally conceived as a kind of greatest-hits reel for MGM composers Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown, it was writers Adolph Green and Betty Comden who came up with using Hollywood’s rocky transition from silent films to “talkies” as a framework for the musical numbers featuring toe-tappin’ geniuses Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor. Told in flashback as schmaltzy Hollywood star Don (Kelly) recalls his less-thandignified climb to the top, this supremely entertaining production features hilarious slapstick, biting commentary on celebrity and wonderful sequences that have become ensconced in cinematic legend. ★★★★
