SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE (1998) 7TWO, 8.45PM, M, ROMANCE

The Sunday Mail (Queensland) - TV Guide - - HIGHLIGHTS -

Seven Oscars and theatres full of cheering audiences awaited this enjoyable romantic comedy after its release. Director John Madden ( MrsBrown) manages to evoke the squalor of 16th-century London perfectly. Joseph Fiennes does a fantastic job as inspirationdry Will Shakespeare as he faces all the problems of the modern-day playwright. He is run ragged by demanding theatre producers (Geoffrey Rush), tempestuous actors and a petulant Queen Elizabeth (Dame Judi Dench), when he spies a young upperclass maiden-cum-muse (Gwyneth Paltrow). With enough Bard in-jokes to have a thespian drooling, not to mention Dench stealing every scene she appears in, this is a top-drawer film. ★★★ Everything here is exactly what you’d expect – if only to please the franchise’s fanboy base. ★★
