RICHARD III (1955) ABC1, 11.25PM, G, DRAMA

The Sunday Mail (Queensland) - TV Guide - - HIGHLIGHTS -

Directed by and starring Laurence Olivier, this adaptation of Shakespeare’s play features one of Olivier’s best and most iconic performances – that of the scheming, deformed Duke of Gloucester, Richard III, transformed here into one of cinema’s definitive antiheroes. It’s probably not true enough to Shakespeare for purists, and some of Olivier’s stylised directorial decisions make it feel more stage than screen at times, but with a performance this good, ably backed by a stellar supporting cast that includes John Gielgud, Claire Bloom and Ralph Richardson, it’s one of the best adaptations of the Bard’s work. ★★★★
