Director John Singleton ( 2 Fast2Furious) commendably avoids a direct rehash of Gordon Park’s influential 1971 cult classic. In casting Samuel L. Jackson (above) in the role of super-slick, expletive-happy New York cop John Shaft (nephew of Richard Roundtree’s original incarnation), Singleton’s job is made easier. Guns, drugs, murder, money and police corruption fuel a confusing plot that stems from the murder of a black man at the hands of a psychotic, snotty, rich kid (Christian Bale). ★★★
