SILVERADO (1985) 7TWO, 9.30PM, PG, WESTERN

The Sunday Mail (Queensland) - TV Guide - - HIGHLIGHTS -

With Clint Eastwood too busy making films with orangutans, few studios bothered with the western during the 1980s. This shot at the genre – a lavish and studied update from noted filmmaker Lawrence Kasdan – rolls all the essential elements into one big full metal jacket and principals Kevin Kline, Kevin Costner and Scott Glenn barrel grit like they were born with dirt in their mouths. Zippidydoo-da. ★★★✩ from a halfway house. The wordplay between Smith and Lawrence is the most zippy since Murphy and Nolte in 48 Hrs and director Michael Bay ( Transformers) adds several flavourful touches to the buddy movie genre. The big question is, how much better could this have been if it weren’t for that ghastly sepia-tinged photography? ★★★ in his pitchfork for a briefcase. Director Taylor Hackford ( ProofofLife) constructs a heavy-handed thriller with entertaining but ultimately soulless visual effects. Pacino revels in the role of the Great Seducer, while Reeves finally shrugs off his persona from Bill&Ted. ★★★✩
