Having not been there when 61-year-old Cliff Young won the 1983 Sydney to Melbourne marathon, it’s hard to argue the facts. But this small screen account of how the potato farmer shuffled his way into the record books comes across more like the movie The Castle than it does a serious biopic.
Kevin Harrington, who shed kilos for the role, is fantastic as Cliffy and he is backed by a stellar local cast including Anne Tenney and Stephen Curry (who were in The Castle), Martin Sacks and Gyton Grantley. It is the typical underdog triumphing story with plenty of jokes but leaves you with the nagging feeling there was a lot more to the story.
