BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (2005) GEM, 8.30PM, M, DRAMA

The Sunday Mail (Queensland) - TV Guide - - HIGHLIGHTS -

With a stunning backdrop, a master director in Ang Lee and commanding performances from Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, this controversial cowboy yarn is near flawless. Lee’s classic begins in 1963, when a relationship blooms between a pair of Wyoming cowboys (Ledger and Gyllenhaal). As the summer ends, both men quickly marry, but their time at Brokeback Mountain proves too strong to forget and the pair try to sustain their relationship over the ensuing two decades. Featuring career-best performances from Ledger and Gyllenhaal, it is the most memorable cinematic love story for some time. ★★★★★ big, bold, exciting and, most of all, believable. A youthful Christopher Reeve manages to embody Superman and inject all the right ingredients, a superb cast (Marlon Brando as Superman’s father, Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor) adds weight and class and a charming script that doesn’t take itself too seriously all combine into one of those rare films that entertains all ages and refuses to date. ★★★★

Forbidden romance: Heath Ledger shines in Brokeback Mountain.
