BLUE VALENTINE (2010) SBS ONE, 9.30PM, DRAMA

The Sunday Mail (Queensland) - TV Guide - - HIGHLIGHTS -

This intense flick charts the toxic relationship between young couple Cindy and Dean (Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling) over several years. The story takes place during one disastrous day in the present, interspersed with scenes from happier times, including when the couple first met when Dean was shifting furniture into Cindy’s grandmother’s nursing home. After an unplanned pregnancy and Cindy’s growing frustration with Dean’s lack of ambition, their romance disintegrates into bickering and negativity. Director Derek Cianfrance’s documentary-making background is evident in this incredibly intimate and realistic portrayal of a couple on the brink, but it certainly won’t leave you with a warm feeling inside. ★★★★
