First-time writer-director Rian Johnson’s “high school noir” redefines the thriller and provides a true cinematic rush from first frame to last. The tantalising plot centres on lonesome student Brendan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who is spurred into action after receiving a cryptic phone call from his missing ex-girlfriend (Emilie de Ravin). Given some puzzling clues, Brendan dives headfirst into the seedy netherworld lurking in both his school and township. Gordon-Levitt’s smart, fearless performance gives this story real heart and the staccato dialogue creates a unique Clockwork Orange- style “slanguage”. ★★★★★

Star power: Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp in the intriguing
