She rose to fame on shows such as Heartbreak High and Rescue Special Ops, now Katherine Hicks is enjoying the spotlight again as the newest cast member of Seven’s drama Winners & Losers. TV Guide sat down with her to find out about her favourite things.
Movie: That is always changing. When I was 10 it was Grease, now I love No Country For Old Men. Book: I’d have to say The God Of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. It is so beautifully told. TV show: Currently working my way through Wentworth and I am hooked. Band or singer: I am loving Gillian Welch, her voice is warm and strong. Album: Honestly, I’ve become more of a playlist kind of girl. But I can listen to The National album High Violet over and over. Karaoke song: I always give Jolene a bit of a nudge with varying results. Gadget: My laptop. I take it everywhere when I travel.
Holiday spot: I love to travel and definitely love warm weather. My last trip was to Thailand, to the Andaman Sea, so beautiful and relaxing.
Thing to do on the weekend: The weekend when we aren’t shooting is made for sleeping in and learning lines and I always try to get outdoors to find a new hike or walk.
Place to go to relax: I often head home to the Byron area for some R and R when I can get away.
Hobby: I love making, building and crafting so I’m starting with framing. Sport to follow or play: I like watching AFL, I also like playing it. Dinner conversation topics: I like getting past the small talk and chatting about what people are really passionate about or interested in.
Room in your house: My favourite room is my bedroom, I put in a lot of effort to make it pleasing to my eye so I can work, read and relax there. Place to hide from everyone: I like having long bubble baths surrounded by candles for a hideaway. Art piece: Gustave Courbet’s The Wheat Sifters. He was an iconoclast of his day. Item you can’t live without: I love my tea! I use loose leaf tea and a tea pot. Luxury product: The one area I splurge on is skin care and my favourite fragrances.
Meal of all time: I love a roast chicken with vegetables and homemade gravy. It reminds me of family gatherings .
Dish to cook: I love cooking for other people, but when it comes to myself I keep it quick and simple, making big mixed salads usually.
Family recipe: I’ve tried to replicate my mum’s trifle but never managed to. Ingredient: I love cinnamon on fresh fruit, yoghurt or in a fruit smoothie. Guilty pleasure: My friend makes the most beautiful chocolate tart. I’ve asked him to stop bringing it over because it’s so hard to resist. Bar: Shebeen in Melbourne. It’s a notfor-profit bar and the earnings go to charity. It has a great atmosphere. Restaurant: I love Sake in South Bank, Melbourne. Great service and amazing Japanese food. Cafe´: Pope Joan on Nicholson St in Melbourne. Great service and decor and a delicious menu.
Style icon: I love Cate Blanchett’s style. She is so naturally beautiful and always looks sophisticated. Fashion designer: Elie Saab. His pieces are stunning, I love the attention to embroidery and beadwork. I have only ever dreamt of wearing one. Piece of clothing: My favourite piece of clothing so far was the Mariana Hardwick dress I wore to the Logies this year. Shop: I often wander into Scanlan & Theodore, such beautiful, intelligently-designed modern pieces. Pure elegance I love it in there. Artist: I am currently reading Frida Kahlo’s biography. I admire her style and her art and her life so much.
