PLEASANTVILLE (1998) GO!, 9.30PM, M, DRAMA

The Sunday Mail (Queensland) - TV Guide - - HIGHLIGHTS -

Two ’90s kids (Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon) are magically transported to the world of their favourite ’50s TV sitcom, only to discover that behind the facade of innocence is a dark and intolerant society. The plot is lifted out of potential cheesiness by truly stunning and seamlessly integrated visuals that contrast a drab monochrome society with colourful late-20th-century sensibilities. Politically heavyhanded in parts, but saved by a great ensemble cast, including William H. Macy as their staid ’50s dad and Jeff Daniels as the besieged soda fountain manager. A superb shot in the arm for cynics. ★★★★
