Reminiscent of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia and Robert Altman’s ShortCuts, Erik Poppe’s film follows a handful of characters suffering through a sweltering Oslo day, who cross each others’ paths without necessarily knowing it. Among the diverse ensemble are an ex-pop star, a man in an asylum, a couple whose newborn son is fighting for survival and a convict using the good nature of his brother to try to escape prison. Like Magnolia, the interlocking stories are intricately constructed, yet the crossover points between the various characters seem completely natural, as the film builds to its emotional climax. ★★★★
