8.30PM, FOXTEL THRILLER ★★ Make no mistake, Charlize Theron deserved the Best Actress Oscar for her work in Monster. This convincing depiction of notorious serial killer Aileen Wuornos is an astonishing feat of both physical and psychological transformation. Thanks to Theron’s subtly sympathetic reading of Wuornos, we not only fear her character but fear for her as well. Ignoring the contradictory nature of Wuornos’ tragic tale probably made sense from a dramatic point of view, but a lesbian love story drummed up in its place is an unsatisfying substitute. This is not to say
Monster is a bad film, but the lack of any perceptible insight into what compelled Wuornos to go on a killing rampage is impossible to ignore. As a result, the random murders – the defining moments of Wuornos’ life – come across as lurid twists of fate.
