The Sunday Mail (Queensland) - TV Guide - - THE LAST WORD - WITH AGONY OF NEW YEAR’S EVE CREATOR, ADAM ZWAR THE AGONY OF NEW YEAR’S EVE 8.25PM, THURSDAY, ABC With Debbie Schipp

“I WAS surprised by the reception Agony of ... [his factual series including Agony Aunts, Agony Uncles and the Agony of Life] so far has had.

I always hoped they would resonate and you always think when you are making something that hopefully people will find the same things appealing that you do. That doesn’t always happen so when you get a heartfelt response you are very grateful for it.

The Agony of New Year’s Eve features seven or eight of our regular aunts and uncles including Lawrence Mooney, Fiona O’Loughlin, Jess Harris, Tom and John Elliott and Dave O’Neil

I tried to select people who would have had heartbreaking as well as fun New Year’s Eves.

There are some sad stories there. Dave O’Neil tells a very sad story of hitchhiking to Mildura because he’d fallen in love with a girl and he decided New Year’s Eve would be a good time to tell her that he loved her.

So he hitchhiked to Mildura and then knocked on the door and she had a boyfriend. So he spent New Year’s Eve in the Mildura caravan park by himself in a tent.

New Year’s Eve brings that sort of stuff out.

My New Year’s Eve story involves a girl as well. You know, you go out with hope and she ends up with someone else – I remember that when I was probably 21.

I ask other questions like how important is it to get the venue right? How far should it be from home? Should you make resolutions? Who shouldn’t you stand next to as the clock strikes 12?

It’s a night fraught with pressure, really. It is totally over-rated. So many people just hoping they’ll have a good time because there’s some sort of suspicious thing that if you’re not having a good time on New Year’s Eve that your whole year will somehow be terrible.

You will see more of the Agony of … series in 2015. We are organising all of that now.

I think it will be just called Agony and each week it will be a different kind of ‘hot button’ or issue.

We’ve got more Agony on the ball and are writing Lowdown for the American market.

I don’t know when that will go into production but we have been developing it for a while now.”
