CASTLE’S COUPLE HERE TO STAY
THEY have built seven seasons of mystery and intrigue on their sizzling romantic chemistry, so news Stana Katic will reunite with her on-screen lover Nathan Fillion in a new season of Castle is reason to rejoice for the TV couple’s devoted fans. Casketeers – the name given to loyal viewers who have kept faith in the relationship between Kate Beckett (Katic) and Richard Castle (Fillion) – can now look forward to at least one more season of the intelligent and magnetic pairing at the heart of the hit US drama series (season seven wraps up tonight on Australian screens).
But as Fillion told TV Guide, the show’s magic would not be complete without the other women in Castle’s TV life: his teenage daughter Alexis (played by Molly Quinn) and theatrical mother Martha (Susan Sullivan).
Remembering back to the show’s audition process, when he sat in on the casting of these key roles, Fillion says these female forces made their presence felt right from the start –- standing out from the crowd of more than 100 actresses called in to test for the parts.
“All you want is for them to come into the room and just be exactly what you’re looking for,” Fillion recalls, “and that’s exactly what Molly did. She came in and was phenomenal. She left … and we picked up the phone and said, ‘That’s her, we need her, it’s a done deal’.”
Industry veteran Sullivan, with a career spanning almost 50 years, made just as a dramatic first impression.
“It was the same thing with Susan,” Fillion says. “She has so much of Martha in her. She came into audition and said, ‘Stand up darling, I won’t be looking down on you, that won’t work for me’. She had me stand up and read with her and that’s just so Martha.” CASTLE TONIGHT, 9.50PM, SEVEN
