FLANAGAN left TheProject under a cloud, outraging some parents by saying Santa didn’t exist on her final appearance last year.

She’d actually handed her notice in months earlier. Flanagan defended the comments for a while, but is now taking a softer line.

“There was no malice in that at all,” she says. “I don’t understand why, if your kid is young enough to believe in Santa why don’t you just turn around and say, ‘That girl’s an idiot, don’t believe her’. Nothing else that comes out of my mouth is particularly valid so why believe that?

“I’m an idiot, but I’m not evil, I didn’t set out to ruin people’s Christmas. I just thought the whole thing was a bit silly and the timing of it was unfortunate because it looked like I got fired.

“[ TheProject] is the reason I can tour my shows nationally, they’re the people who gave me a profile in this country when I didn’t have one … so I was never setting out to stick it to them. They’re my favourite people!”
