RETURN OF THE MONSTERS

THE DoctorWho Christmas special promises to include a “starliner full of galactic supervillains” — so what monsters from the show’s history does Peter Capaldi want to see return?

“It changes every day,” he says, before admitting to a certain fondness for the 1970s-era monsters the Axons (“beautiful and Grecian sort of creatures who suddenly transformed into blancmanges when they got angry with you”) and the Wirrn (“insect-like creatures who looked more like men in sleeping bags shuffling about with rubber hoses coming out of their heads”).

“One of the things I love about DoctorWho is sometimes the budget does not meet the ambition of the imagination of the writers, so sometimes things are a little bit cobbled together, even in our day,” Capaldi says.

“I quite like some of these old monsters that are Sellotaped together.”
