THE MEN

“Novak Djokovic (below) is impossible to go past. He plays so well at the Australian Open. He has won four of the past five. Stan Wawrinka is a proven in Australia, winning in 2014, and he beat Novak in the French Open last year – he is my second favourite. Andy Murray is the No.2 player in the world. Roger Federer had a very good 2015 but he didn’t win a major. Rafael Nadal struggled for most of last year. Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic have a very good chance of getting into the second week. “

THE WOMEN

“How heavily has that defeat in the US Open weighed on Serena Williams’ (right) shoulders? I think it was crushing. How does she respond to that? She’s 34; she’s still the favourite, though [at the time of press, Williams was still in doubt to participate]. Maria Sharapova has had a lot of injuries. A big talent is Madison Keys. I think she’s a potential grand slam winner. She played exceptionally well here last year. Victoria Azarenka has been lost a bit. She has won two Aussie Opens.”
