THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO
10.30PM, SEVEN ★★
This is the first movie based on Alexander Dumas’ classic revenge swashbuckler since 1934, and Disney pulled out all stops to make sure everyone is down with the Count. The best thing about The Count of Monte Cristo is Jim Caviezel, whose deceptively soulful reading of the title role grows in stature as the inevitable epic showdown looms. Unbelieivably much of Caviezel’s exacting effort is white-anted by a spectacularly misconceived performance by Guy Pearce (who, it must be pointed out, reportedly turned down the lead so he could play against type).
