THAILAND one day, France the next. As work assignments go, the role of globe-trotting criminal investigator Jack Garrett, in new US drama series Criminal Minds:

Beyond Borders must have read on the page like the perfect ticket to fly. In the tradition of JAG and the NCIS franchises before it, Beyond

Borders follows a crack FBI squad, led by Garrett, which solves cases involving US citizens on international soil. But as leading man Gary Sinise discovered, his new gig wasn’t the travel adventure the show’s title might suggest.

Instead, thanks to some crafty set design and clever re-imagining of different neighbourhoods around Los Angeles, the crime-thriller barely crossed a few postcodes, let alone the international date lines he thought might be on the cards for the spin-off ’s cast and crew.

While drawn to the procedural, where “every episode takes place in a different environment, different set of rules, different country, different cultures, all of that”, in reality, Sinise says, “I get to travel from where I live, to downtown LA”.
