Two killed in Miles fire


TWO peo­ple trag­i­cally killed in a house fire in Miles yesterday were pre­par­ing a sur­prise 80th birth­day for a fam­ily mem­ber.

David Thrupp and Karen Shaw were found in­side their Ly­nagh St home af­ter the fire had bro­ken out at about 4.30am. Western Downs Re­gional Coun­cil Mayor Ray Brown said both were re­spected mem­bers of the com­mu­nity.

“It’s a sad day for Miles,” Cr Brown said. Their fam­i­lies “had a long as­so­ci­a­tion with the com­mu­nity and they will be dearly missed”, he said.

“It’s such a tragedy as they were ac­tu­ally plan­ning to sur­prise a fam­ily mem­ber to­mor­row for their 80th birth­day,” Cr Brown said.

Friends of both fam­i­lies have taken to so­cial media to pay their re­spects.

“Think­ing of the Mr and Mrs Shaw at this time,” one woman wrote. “David was a great per­son.”

A crime scene has been es­tab­lished as in­ves­ti­ga­tions con­tinue into the cause of the blaze but ini­tial in­ves­ti­ga­tions sug­gest it was not de­lib­er­ately lit.

One neigh­bour who wished to re­main anony­mous said the flames de­stroyed the front of the house in a mat­ter of min­utes.
