Aussies freed from Viet­nam


HANOI: Two Aus­tralians jailed in Viet­nam are to be freed un­der a broad amnesty mark­ing the coun­try’s 70th an­niver­sary in­de­pen­dence day cel­e­bra­tions.

The uniden­ti­fied pair are among 34 for­eign­ers to be re­leased un­der the amnesty that in­cludes in­mates from China, Malaysia and Laos.

A Depart­ment of For­eign Af­fairs and Trade spokesman yesterday con­firmed the Aus­tralians were among those to be re­leased on Au­gust 31.

There are cur­rently 28 Aus­tralians de­tained or jailed in Viet­nam on var­i­ous charges, in­clud­ing drug traf­fick­ing.
