Taipans must refocus for road trip without Jawai

The Sunday Mail (Queensland) - - SPORT - GREG DAVIS

MATCH-WINNER Alex Loughton says the Nathan Jawai-less Taipans must move on quickly from the heartstopping win over Illawarra with the well-rested New Zealand Breakers waiting for them in Auckland today.

Jawai is set to miss today’s clash with the Breakers at Spark Arena and could spend a number of weeks out of action after injuring his foot in the second quarter of Cairns’ 88-87 victory against the Hawks on Friday night.

While Jawai was sidelined for the second half, power forward Loughton stepped up, scoring 16 of his 19 points after the main break, including a free throw with 0.8 seconds left on the clock to hand the Taipans a stirring win.

Loughton said the tough task ahead made it easy for the Snakes to put the seasonopening success behind them.

“It’s a double-header weekend for us so we have to put the win in its place, learn from our mistakes and lock and load for a team that’s sitting there waiting for us to come into their building,’’ he said.

“They have their first swing of the bat for their season and it is a quick turnaround for us, so it will be a challenge but a challenge we are looking forward to.

“They are a very physical side and hard to match up on.” WINNER: Alex Loughton.
