HACK­ETT BACK IN THE SWIM

GRANT Hack­ett has taken an­other big step in his re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion from ad­dic­tion and men­tal health is­sues, mov­ing from the Gold Coast to Mel­bourne to be closer to his chil­dren and ex-wife Candice Al­ley.

The triple-Olympic cham­pion was snapped look­ing toned and healthy yes­ter­day for the first time since his re­cent move, emerg­ing from a work­out at his lo­cal gym in Prahran.

It is un­der­stood Hack­ett re­lo­cated to Vic­to­ria from the Glit­ter Strip late last month in an ef­fort to be closer to his chil­dren, twins Jag­ger and Char­l­ize, aged seven, as he and Al­ley ne­go­ti­ate their cus­tody is­sues.

The cou­ple, who mar­ried in 2007 and split five years later, share cus­tody of the twins. It is un­der­stood that the pair is en­gaged in an on­go­ing court bat­tle.

A close friend of Hack­ett con­firmed the ex-swim­mer was de­ter­mined to mend re­la­tion­ships with his fam­ily in the wake of what can only be de­scribed as a tu­mul­tuous two years.

The fallen Aussie swim cham­pion was sen­sa­tion­ally ar­rested in Fe­bru­ary after a vi­o­lent dis­pute with his brother Craig at their par­ents’ home on the Gold Coast.

Soon after, Hack­ett re­lo­cated to the US, where he un­der­went a 30-day re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion pro­gram in Mal­ibu be­fore an ex­tended stay at the home of his good friend and US swim su­per­star, Michael Phelps.

Now pur­port­edly sober and fight­ing fit, Hack­ett has re­cently taken up a full-time po­si­tion with wealth man­age­ment com­pany Au­s­tock Life.

He is also reg­u­larly hit­ting the pool; how­ever, he yes­ter­day dis­missed talk he was con­sid­er­ing a com­pet­i­tive come­back as “im­pos­si­ble”.

“There’s no way I am swim­ming for any other rea­son than to stay fit,” Hack­ett said with a laugh.

“But I can say I am loving be­ing back in Mel­bourne again.

“I feel great and am re­ally happy to be back work­ing and stay­ing fit and healthy.”
