HACKETT BACK IN THE SWIM
GRANT Hackett has taken another big step in his rehabilitation from addiction and mental health issues, moving from the Gold Coast to Melbourne to be closer to his children and ex-wife Candice Alley.
The triple-Olympic champion was snapped looking toned and healthy yesterday for the first time since his recent move, emerging from a workout at his local gym in Prahran.
It is understood Hackett relocated to Victoria from the Glitter Strip late last month in an effort to be closer to his children, twins Jagger and Charlize, aged seven, as he and Alley negotiate their custody issues.
The couple, who married in 2007 and split five years later, share custody of the twins. It is understood that the pair is engaged in an ongoing court battle.
A close friend of Hackett confirmed the ex-swimmer was determined to mend relationships with his family in the wake of what can only be described as a tumultuous two years.
The fallen Aussie swim champion was sensationally arrested in February after a violent dispute with his brother Craig at their parents’ home on the Gold Coast.
Soon after, Hackett relocated to the US, where he underwent a 30-day rehabilitation program in Malibu before an extended stay at the home of his good friend and US swim superstar, Michael Phelps.
Now purportedly sober and fighting fit, Hackett has recently taken up a full-time position with wealth management company Austock Life.
He is also regularly hitting the pool; however, he yesterday dismissed talk he was considering a competitive comeback as “impossible”.
“There’s no way I am swimming for any other reason than to stay fit,” Hackett said with a laugh.
“But I can say I am loving being back in Melbourne again.
“I feel great and am really happy to be back working and staying fit and healthy.”
