McEvoy serves up Naan for autumn
TONY McEvoy is confident his impressive colt Run Naan can measure up to the richest two-year-old races in the autumn, after producing a devastating burst to win the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate at Flemington yesterday.
The victory added to an already impressive carnival for McEvoy, but he is now expectantly looking to next year’s Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper after providing the first and third placegetters in the 1000m scamper.
“He is a really good colt, I couldn’t have been more impressed with him,” McEvoy said of Run Naan.
“I will pop him aside now and come back for the autumn and have a look at him.
“This is a pretty big stage, but the autumn is the biggest stage for these babies.”
Run Naan ($13) is one of 12 horses McEvoy has in the stables for Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum and it is a relationship the trainer is keen to expand upon.
“I am so excited to have these colours (in the stable), it is brilliant for my brand and they have bred some beautiful horses,” he said
Run Naan started slowly, but finished over the top of Encryption ($5.50) and McEvoy’s other runner Belzella ($9.50).
Jockey Andrew Mallyon made the most of his only ride of the Flemington carnival, making good on a promise to his grandfather Mick, a former champion jockey, that he would win it for him.
