Confession breach gets fast action

The Sunday Mail (Queensland) - - NEWS - DARYL PASSMORE

A CATHOLIC priest excommunicated for breaking the secrecy of the confessional has been treated more harshly than pedophiles in the church, his lawyer says.

Fr Ezinwanne Igbo, from the Stella Maris parish at Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast, has been punished after being found to have breached canonical law.

But his lawyer Terry Boyce said the priest had been denied justice during the process and the church’s response was in stark contrast to its handling of child abuse cases.

“The excommunication of a pedophile priest usually takes two to three years, if it happens at all,” he said. “Fr Igbo has been excommunicated in a matter of weeks.”

Fr Igbo now intends to appeal the decision to the Apostolic Signatura, the church’s highest judicial authority apart from the Pope himself.
