Mundine ducking on gay remark

The Sunday Mail (Queensland) - - NEWS - PHIL ROTHFIELD

BOXER Anthony Mundine is backtracking on his comments that the death penalty would make gay people “think twice about doing it”.

Mr Mundine arrived home from his appearance on I’m a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here! to a storm of anger and protests over his remarks.

“I was referring to paedophiles,” he claimed. “I can’t stand to even think about a grown man wanting to have a sexual relationship with a child. There needs to be more serious consequences.”

He says he has a number of friends who are gay.

“I don’t care if people are gay,” he said.

“I’ve got gay mates. I gee them up and talk s--t to them. We joke and laugh. At the end of the day, it’s their choice and I don’t judge them.”

Mr Mundine left the show after two weeks to spend more time with his children.

He admits he grew closer to his long-time boxing rival Danny Green on the show.

“There was a lot of tension early,” he said. “But the more you spend time with people …

“We know respect each other. We got along.”
