IT’S an un­usu­ally hot sum­mer’s day and Ed­ward Ham­mond Har­graves, a burly 34-year-old English­man just back from the Cal­i­for­nia gold rush, is rid­ing along a trib­u­tary of the Mac­quarie River be­tween Bathurst and Or­ange, in New South Wales.

Har­graves feels a strange, eerie feel­ing as though he is “sur­rounded by gold’’.

He puts some dirt in a tin pan and swills it around in the creek
