MAN SHOT BY COPS IN HOSPITAL
Probe launched as cops kill patient under guard Prisoner turned violent before officer opened fire
A MAN who was under police guard was shot dead late last night at a southeast Queensland hospital after becoming violent towards an officer.
The Sunday Mail understands the man had been arrested on Friday and was in custody at the police watch house when he allegedly faked illness and had to be taken to Ipswich Hospital yesterday.
It is believed the man then became violent towards one of the of- ficers before he was shot about 9pm. The man was treated by hospital emergency staff at the scene but died from his injuries.
The police officer who opened fire was later treated for facial injuries.
A police source said officers had no choice but to shoot the man.
“Police had to use lethal force,” the source said.
Ethical Standards Command launched an urgent investigation on behalf of the State Coroner.
Commissioner Ian Stewart was last night informed of the incident, while the officers involved were expected to be interviewed overnight.
The shooting comes just a year after a coroner recommended training for officers to help them deal with people suffering mental health issues after an inquest examined a spate of police shootings. SEE COURIERMAIL.COM.AU FOR THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
