WORLD CHEWER: MasterChef judges Matt Preston, George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan have taken a boys’ foodie trip around the world. MASTERCHEF stars George Calombaris, Matt Preston and Gary Mehigan have treated themselves to a globetrotting tour of the world’s best restaurants to celebrate 10 years on the small screen.

The trio took a boys’ trip to culinary hot-spots Barcelona, Naples, Copenhagen, Chi- cago and Lima to toast fine food and friendship.

Calombaris said: “You hear about boys’ trip or girls’ trips away. We wanted to treat ourselves after 10 amazing years on MasterChef.

“I’m sure some would loved to have filmed it … but we never wanted it to be that. It was a simple celebration, three mates hanging out doing something we love, which is eat food, talk about food and immerse ourselves in food.”

The first stop was Barcelona’s acclaimed Disfrutar.

“Everything we ate there had us banging our heads against the wall,” Preston said.

From Spain, they jetted to Naples for pizza, then Copenhagen to the Michelin-starred Geranium and Noma.

Chicago’s Alinea was on Calombaris’s bucket list.

“I dreamed about being able to afford to eat at Alinea,” he said. “I ticked that one off the bucket list.”

Lima was the group’s last stop, with two restaurants inside the world’s top 10, but Preston added: “We found some excellent ceviche at a great seafood shack.”

Preston said they had been planning the trip for a while.

“It had to be something really special and important to block off a period from every other demand,” he said. “The other thing was getting approval from our partners to disappear … but they know what wankers we can be when we’re breaking down the entree, main and dessert.”
