Are you hav­ing trou­ble reach­ing for your shoelaces? Or get­ting a mug from the top shelf? It could be time to stretch, US ex­perts say.

“Peo­ple don’t al­ways re­alise how im­por­tant stretch­ing is to avoid­ing in­jury and dis­abil­ity,” says Elissa Hu­ber-An­der­son, a phys­io­ther­a­pist from Mas­sachusetts Gen­eral Hos­pi­tal.

Our mus­cles be­come stiffer as we age, and un­less we stretch them out, our mo­bil­ity de­clines and our risk of strains, joint pain and fall­ing in­creases. A mix of dy­namic and static stretches that fo­cus on the legs, hip flex­ors and pelvis, lower back, neck and shoul­ders is ideal and should be done at least three times a week.
