Good news: As you savour your next glass of wine, you can do so in the knowl­edge it could be low­er­ing your risk of di­a­betes. A Dan­ish study found that men and women who drank al­co­hol three to four times dur­ing the week had a 27 per cent and 32 per cent re­duced risk, re­spec­tively, com­pared to those who drank less than one drink per week.

But not all al­co­hol is cre­ated equal, ac­cord­ing to the re­searchers. While seven glasses of wine per week was as­so­ci­ated with 25-30 per cent lower risk, a sim­i­lar num­ber of beers re­duced di­a­betes risk in men only ( 21 per cent lower) and had no ef­fect on women. And it’s not such good news for lovers of spir­its – seven or more of those over a week ac­tu­ally in­creased di­a­betes risk in women by a whop­ping 83 per cent.
