Want to bump up the kilo­joule burn of your lunchtime stroll? For­get about run­ning – just pop a piece of gum in your mouth. A re­cent Ja­panese study found that when peo­ple chewed gum as they walked, their heart rate sig­nif­i­cantly in­creased. Men over 40 also torched more kilo­joules and took more steps when they com­bined chewing gum with walk­ing, so if you’re keen to turn your mid­day ram­ble into a heart-pump­ing work­out ( mi­nus the sweat), a stick of gum could be the an­swer!
