COOK WITH CANOLA FOR A BRAIN BOOST
Want to prevent cognitive decline? Science says eat like a viking. Much like the popular Mediterranean diet, the Nordic diet is largely plant-based, but it uses canola rather than olive oil. A new study published in the journal Nutrients shows the omega-3 levels in canola may have neuroprotective properties that when combined with antioxidant-rich fruit such as apples and pears can better protect your brain cells from free radical damage. This adds to existing research linking a Nordic diet with a reduced risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Keen to keep your grey matter in good nick? Along with fruit, veg and canola oil, eat plenty of fish (wild or locally-sourced where possible) and only a little meat and root veg.
