Want to pre­vent cog­ni­tive de­cline? Science says eat like a vik­ing. Much like the pop­u­lar Mediterranean diet, the Nordic diet is largely plant-based, but it uses canola rather than olive oil. A new study pub­lished in the jour­nal Nu­tri­ents shows the omega-3 lev­els in canola may have neu­ro­pro­tec­tive prop­er­ties that when com­bined with an­tiox­i­dant-rich fruit such as ap­ples and pears can bet­ter pro­tect your brain cells from free rad­i­cal dam­age. This adds to ex­ist­ing re­search link­ing a Nordic diet with a re­duced risk of heart dis­ease and type 2 di­a­betes. Keen to keep your grey mat­ter in good nick? Along with fruit, veg and canola oil, eat plenty of fish (wild or lo­cally-sourced where pos­si­ble) and only a lit­tle meat and root veg.
