MATTHEW MITCHAM Depression

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - Body and Soul - - REAL LIFE -

In the years leading up to and following his gold medal-winning dive at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Mitcham suffered “profound depression” that led to self-harming, binge drinking and drug abuse, but he initially kept it to himself, not seeking help due to the shame he felt. “Even if you have the world at your feet, you can still suffer. I had no reason to feel the way I did and that compounded the depression”, he says, adding that for anyone going through the same things, the best path is to share your story. “Reaching out should be a first resort and not a last resort.”
