The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - Escape - - Celebrity Escape - LORNA JANE CLARKSON

LAST year was a year of milestones for fitness addict Lorna Jane Clarkson. She hit 100 (stores not runs) with her Little Collins St shop opening in Melbourne and is having a tilt at the US market, opening 12 stores there since last March.

This year, her ‘‘ move, nourish, believe’’ philosophy will come to California with 25 stores planned to open.

Despite her growing affection for California, ‘‘ home is very much where the heart is’’ and in Clarkson’s case that’s with husband, Bill, and Roger the dog in Brisbane.

As well as confessing the one thing she can’t travel without (no surprises here) Clarkson shares her top tips for a healthy year of travel in 2013.

Where is your favourite place to travel for a holiday?

LJC: Paris, Hawaii and Mexico – but, whenever possible, I prefer to discover new places. There’s so much of the world to discover and so little time to do it in.

Tell me about your trips to California.

LJC: I have always loved California as a holiday destination. I love spending time there as it has all of the essential ingredients for active living. There’s fantastic hiking, biking and exercise as well as some of the most nutritious and delicious health food restaurants, cafes and juice bars in the world. One of my favourites has to be True Food Kitchen, and luckily there’s one directly opposite our Santa Monica store. I also love the Malibu Hills – there are amazing ocean views and the Malibu Lumber Yard for lunch and retail therapy.

Do you collect souvenirs?

LJC: I look for something to remember my holiday by – usually for the house. I recently brought back some elephant paintings from India and ornate plates from Mexico.

Has a destination ever changed you?

LJC: I think travel in general opens your mind and gives you a bigger view and appreciation of different cultures. I believe it’s important to immerse yourself in the local environment, not just the tourist activities.
