GATEWAY TO EVERYWHERE

All Europe’s a stage for Berlin-based Australian performer Jon Allingham

MY FAVOURITE TYPE OF HOLIDAY IS ...

One with multiple destinations. I love to see a few different things whenever I get the time. Heading somewhere tropical to relax and swim and chill out, then to a big city I’ve never seen, then maybe a few days of hiking through mountains and forests to finish it all off.

I PREPARE MYSELF FOR IT BY …

Checking the weather, booking some (usually last-minute) accommodation and asking all my friends what their must-see tips are.

THEATRE AND PERFORMANCE IN BERLIN IS GREAT BECAUSE ...

It’s so incredibly varied. There’s opera and electronic music but also amazing cabaret, contemporary circus, independent cinema and stand-up comedy. The best part is how unique each performance is – and so unapologetically Berlin.

MY FAVOURITE WEEKEND GETAWAY IS …

A cheap, last-minute flight to a new city. Coming from Australia I’m still surprised by how many countries, cities and cultures are within a few hours on a plane in Europe. On long weekends, my wife and I search for destinations at the start of the week, book accommodation and flights midweek, then head off Friday night.

I NEVER TRAVEL WITHOUT …

I’m a tech-head, so I’ve always got to have my USB battery packs, global chargers, my phone and some great noise-cancelling headphones.

I STAY FIT ON THE ROAD BY ...

I’m a circus performer, so body weight exercise is my go-to. I have apps I use for workouts or I see what I can use in my accommodation. Plus I’ll always walk everywhere – the best way to keep my body happy and see a city’s best parts.

MY GO-TO TRAVEL APP IS ...

Google Trips. It’s got plenty of typical tourist information, plus extras like local road rules, tips for taking taxis and public transport. By this point it’s also learned what I like to see, so the suggestions for off-track interesting sights are really great.

MY LUGGAGE IS …

Always a backpack and a suitcase. I’ve had the same Lululemon backpack for seven years, so I can keep all my gadgets and important bits organised and strapped to my back. It has a pocket for everything I like to take: headphones, passport, toothbrush, sunglasses … everything!

BEST PACKING HACK …

Obviously roll everything up to save space. But my backpack is my ultimate packing hack.

MY TRAVEL PHILOSOPHY IS …

Relax, keep your eyes open, and don’t forget to look up. Plus, don’t rush it – take pleasure in everything you get to see and experience, and don’t stress about what you don’t see. You can always come back.
