Flight expert Demi Kavaratzis is checking out on check-in

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - Escape - - HOW I PACK -

Whether interstate or overseas, in New Zealand or any one of her company’s global offices in Seattle, Singapore, India, Japan and Hong Kong, Expedia air commercial director for Oceania Demi Kavaratzis is always planning a flight. And she doesn’t have time to hang around at the baggage carousel.

MY PACKING STYLE IS …

Last-minute yet efficient. Carry-on only, if I can possibly help it.

I PACK FOR A TRIP BY …

Watching the weather. With carry-on only, I have no space to waste. I plan and research how best to experience the city I’m visiting in the few hours I have. I try not to stress. My mantra is, as long as you have your passport, a credit card and your favourite mascara, then there’s nothing you cannot buy at your destination.

MY ESSENTIALS FOR A WORK TRIP INCLUDE …

Good shoes and outfits that go from day to night, from office to a cocktail bar – it can’t be all work and no play.

MY LUGGAGE IS …

My carry-on and check-in are Victorinox Lexicon suitcases – practical, yet super-stylish. Always invest in a suitcase with four wheels. Your back will love you and you’ll whiz through the airport. I also recommend a built-in lock as you’ll never lose it.

MY OUTFIT WHEN I TRAVEL IS …

Stylish, lightweight, comfortable and layered. I pack a pair of slippers to put on once on board – they’re comfy and a lot more hygienic than wandering around the plane wearing no shoes.

MY TOP CARRY-ON TIP IS …

Take a carry-on toiletries bag that meets security requirements. You pass through security a lot quicker, you don’t get anything important or expensive confiscated. That aside, have lip balm on hand for a long haul.

I NEVER BOARD WITHOUT …

My Burberry trench coat. It’s lightweight, suits all occasions and I adore it. I once wore it on top of airline PJs connecting from one long haul flight to another. Nobody noticed.

MY WASH BAG STAPLES …

Moisturiser – airplanes are hard on your skin. A purse-friendly winner for all seasons is Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel. I also always take bonjela Adult. When you need it, it’s an absolute lifesaver.

I USED TO PACK …

Travel power adaptors for different countries, but I’ve since invested in an international multi-country adaptor with a USB port.

BIGGEST PACKING MISTAKE …

Taking too many shoes. I’ve now decided you only need two or three pairs at the most: heels for the office and nights out, flats for travelling and casual outings, and runners for exercise.

MY GO-TO TRAVEL APP IS …

The Expedia app, of course. It has all my travel details from my flight to hotel in one place. It also tells me if there are flight delays or gate changes – sometimes before the airport does. I also love Flightradar24, which lets loved ones track a flight in real time.

MY PACKING RESOLUTION IS …

To travel with carry-on only, regardless of destination. And take only toiletries, shoes and garments I will use more than once.
