WHERE WILL YOU GO IN 2019?
In July 2010, a picture of a woman’s foot next to a dog at a Mexican taco stand was posted by a bloke called Kevin to a new social media site called Codename. Two years later, he and his co-partner sold the site, renamed Instagram, to Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg for $US1 billion.
In the short time since, this pictureperfect, unicorns-and-rainbows version of life has become a prime resource for travel voyeurs and for holiday-makers researching their next destination.
Do a quick search on Instagram for a tourist board, hotel group, cruise company or airline, or travel professionals and influencers like @markfitz who took our beautiful cover image, and you immediately discover new tropical resorts; a city’s most visited tourist spots, restaurants, bars, shops; animals in the wild; and extremes of nature, from icy mountains to water bluer than your imagination.
It’s just one source we use when predicting the trends and best experiences for the coming year. Add to that data insights, the wisdom of travel industry experts, the Escape team’s in-depth knowledge, plus a pinch of gut-feeling and we can give you an accurate picture of what your holidays will look like in the next 12 months.
The experiences I’m most excited about are the rise and rise of the bubble tent; the ongoing obsession with Japan, Canada and Sri Lanka; ever-increasing options for solo and female travellers; and environmental and social initiatives travel companies are taking to ensure the places we love to visit are not ruined by tourism.
Now it’s time to get out your calendar and get ready for a holiday.
