Whether it was be­ing plonked down in front of the telly as a preschoole­r or turn­ing to it as a par­ent­ing refuge, it’s hard to imag­ine a time when Big Bird, Ker­mit, Grover and the gang weren’t part of our lives.

It still comes as a bit of a shock to see the pro­gram mark its 50th an­niver­sary, invit­ing some spe­cial guests into the hood to cel­e­brate. The new sea­son be­gins, as it should, with a party with stars young and old adding their tal­ents to the oc­ca­sion.

Ac­tor Joseph Gor­donLe­vitt (In­cep­tion) serves as the au­di­ence’s guide, break­ing the fourth wall to talk to view­ers about his favourite Sesame Street me­mories and in­tro­duc­ing sur­prise acts in­clud­ing No­rah Jones, Nile Rodgers, Dave Grohl, Meghan Trainor, Whoopi Gold­berg, Chrissy Teigen and Elvis Costello.

The spe­cial cul­mi­nates with the great Patti LaBelle bring­ing the street to­gether for a stel­lar per­for­mance of
