Howard wants Libs to say No

FOR­MER prime min­is­ter John Howard is call­ing se­nior con­ser­va­tive MPs and push­ing them to come out against same-sex mar­riage.

The Sun­day Tele­graph can re­veal Mr Howard has ac­cused se­nior min­is­ters such as Scott Mor­ri­son, Peter Dut­ton and Mathias Cor­mann of run­ning dead on the is­sue.

Mean­while, the No cam­paign is claim­ing sup­port for same-sex mar­riage is plum­met­ing af­ter the High Court dis­missed a chal­lenge to the postal vote.

A poll of 4000 vot­ers taken be­fore the court rul­ing found 65 per cent in favour and 35 per cent against same-sex mar­riage. A se­cond poll taken in the 10 days since recorded a 7 per cent swing away from the Yes vote.

Se­nior Lib­eral sources said Mr Howard is call­ing con­ser­va­tive mem­bers of the Turnbull gov­ern­ment to lobby them to pub­licly de­fend tra­di­tional mar­riage.

John Howard has been vo­cal in the de­bate.
