A ROYAL COUP FOR RATINGS

The Sunday Telegraph (Sydney) - - NEWS -

REPUBLICANS are gnashing their teeth after the wedding of the ninth in line to the throne to a complete nobody blitzed the TV ratings for Channel 7 on Friday night.

A whopping 1.5 million Australians watched the Queen’s granddaughter Princess Eugenie, 27, marry tequila executive Jack Brooksbank, 32, in a ceremony at Windsor Castle. Another 400,000 watched on Facebook and Instagram.

While anti-monarchists scoffed at Seven for airing the wedding, it wound up being one of the highest rating shows of the week.

Add that to the five million Australians who tuned in to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s nuptials in May, and the crowds who will greet them in Sydney this week, and you can see Republican dreams being crushed by the fairytale appeal of a new generation of royals.
